Wedding Flowers for a Crafty Bride

Are you the kind of person who prefers to make homemade gifts, like hand-knitted sweaters and scarves? Are you a fanatic for scrap-booking? Do you love spicing up your clothes with your own bead and jewel designs? Do your friends turn to you for help when they need something crafty done?

If that’s the case, then you may have considered adding your own creative spark to your wedding festivities. One great way to do that is to create your own wedding flower arrangements. Here are just a few ideas for wedding flowers you could do yourself.

Boutonnière

Odds are your men won’t be up for sporting your custom jewelry or latest knitting masterpiece at the altar. But you can certainly add your personal touch with flowers.

Difficulty level: Easy
Average time: 10-15 minutes
Skills involved: Wiring and taping flowers and their stems.
The challenge: A little time consuming if there are many to do. Do them assembly line fashion.
Tip: Do not curl your bout stem. No one does that anymore. It looks unprofessional.

Wedding Cake Decor

Unless you’re in the running for Top Chef, a wedding cake can be a daunting project. But you can take an “average” cake to “fantastic” with eye-catching florals.

Difficulty level: Medium
Average time: 30-40 minutes
Skills involved: Planning the design; preparing the flowers ahead of time.
The challenge: Coordinating the delivery of the cake with the time you have to do the actual decorating.
Tip: Put the larger flowers in place first, followed by the smaller ones. Add greenery as an accent.

Cascade Bouquet (Teardrop / Shower Bouquet)

You could create a necklace or earring set to add a hint of sparkle to the star of the show, but the bridal bouquet offers much more visual impact. Your bridesmaids will really be fighting to catch this piece.

Difficulty level: Hard
Average time: 45–60 minutes +
Skills involved: Planning the design with appropriate flowers; working with a wet foam bouquet holder; wiring and taping.
The challenge: Getting a good shape that is “airy” and not too compact.
Tip: As a finishing touch, hot glue satin bows to the back to help conceal the plastic holder.

Whether it’s bouquets, table decorations or boutonnières, with a little time management and a lot of creativity, you can add your own crafty touch to your wedding. Embarassed

Money Saving Tips for Your Wedding Flowers

CHOOSE FLOWERS IN SEASON
Avoid using flowers that are exotic or not in season. It is much more expensive to have to specially imported flowers. Plus, if you’re looking for out-of-season blooms, they will be harder to find elsewhere, and their rarity can also add to the cost.

DECORATE WITH GREENERY
Use greenery such as trees and garlands of ivy to fill large areas. This will give a dramatic impact for relatively little money. Small trees, such as palms and ficus can usually be rented. Ivy garlands and eucalyptus leaves are also lovely when placed around the edge of the cake or gift table.

DECORATE WITH ROSE PETALS
You can choose from fresh or silk petals. A scattering of petals on each table adds a lovely touch of color, and petals en masse, such as a ring around the base of your cake, makes a dramatic statement. Petals come in different color choices and are inexpensive.

RE-USE ARRANGEMENTS AND BOUQUETS
Use your ceremony floral arrangements at the reception. You’ve already paid for them, why not get a whole evenings worth out of them? Floral arrangements and ribbons which decorated the aisle can dress up the cake table. Bouquets can also be used to decorate the cake, guest book or head tables. Altar arrangements can be placed on either side of the head table, or used at the entry to the ballroom.

CONSIDER SHARING CHURCH ARRANGEMENTS
If another wedding will take place at the same location and same day as yours, you may want to share altar arrangements, pew bows, and other flowers and split the cost.

CONSIDER SMALLER BOUQUETS
Rather than having you and your bridesmaids carry large, elaborate bouquets, how about smaller, elegant bouquets instead? The larger the bouquet, and the more time spent in putting it together will cost you more money. Consider the dramatic look of one or two white calla lilies or a single rose (what a classic!) with a lovely ribbon that coordinates with your color scheme beautifully tied on the stems.

Types of Flowers for Weddings

Okay so you have booked the church or registry office, booked the venue, found the perfect wedding dress, sorted the invitations and the bridesmaids dresses so what next? What types of flowers are you going to have?

What are you prepared to pay for the flowers? As we all know real flowers are very costly from a florist. First we need to consider what type of wedding it is, if it is the traditional white wedding then there are many types of flowers that you can consider.

What are you going to decorate with your flowers? The Church?, receptions?, buttonholes? Corsage? And maybe even the cake.

The time of year needs to be considered also as real flowers obviously only bloom at certain times of the year although with imports some of this can be addressed. The color also needs to be considered so that the types of flowers we choose blends with the wedding dress and bridesmaids outfits.

If it is a spring wedding there are many types of flowers that we can choose from, tulips come in many colors and form, daffodils always look so cheerful and sunny especially as table decorations. Roses are especially delightful as they come in so many colors and you have the added bonus of beautiful scent.

Another option for the types of flowers that you use could be silk flowers which are so realistic that you can not tell the difference from the real ones, these come in all sizes, shapes and colors although obviously no scent.

The cost of these is not much different to real flowers but with the vast array you see in shops you may be able to cut the cost by purchasing a few at a time in different places. The advantage for using these types of flowers is that they can be chosen and ordered in advance of the wedding with no problem of the flowers wilting.

With these types of flowers you can have whatever you want as they are not seasonal unlike real flowers. They can be used for decorating the tables and the wedding cake as they will not spoil or mark the cake, or drop pollen. The added advantage with these types of flowers is that they can be kept after the wedding to serve as a reminder of the perfect day.

You can now also freeze dried flowers which may be an option for scattering over the tables or the cake at the reception venue. So whatever you choose there is plenty out there and a mixture of the different types is always available to you

Discover Why it Makes Sense Using Artificial Flowers for Weddings

Give the Gift that Smiles Back

Artificial flowers have become so popular that people are now opting for these rather than buying real flowers and spending much more money only to have them thrown away after the wedding. It is more economical to buy artificial flowers for your wedding. It is also a good alternative if you suffer from allergies and cannot be around real flowers. The flowers can be stored and reused for another occasion and no one would probably know the difference, or you can keep that one special bouquet as a keepsake of your wedding. The only way you can use real flowers after a wedding is to make them into a nice potpourri after they have dried up.

When buying real flowers for your wedding, it all depends on the time of year that you are getting married and what flowers are in bloom. So if you really want a certain type of flower you should make certain that you are getting married when those flowers are in bloom, because most flowers bear in a particular season. That is why if you choose to go with artificial flowers you can get just about any type of flower that you want, it doesn’t matter what time of the year it is.

Another point to consider is with real flowers you will have to hire someone to ensure that the flowers are maintained, they have to have enough sunlight and water to keep them looking fresh. This is definitely going to cost you some dollars, whereas artificial flowers are a breeze to maintain, you just place them where you want and you are on your way, no worries about maintenance and no extra expenses for maintenance. Also you can order artificial flowers way in advance and store them in your home unlike real flowers where you have to order within a certain time and have them stored in the florist refrigeration until you are ready to collect them. This will certainly save you that trip of rushing to the florist in time to collect your fresh flowers.

If you order artificial flowers from a professional florist, you can expect to get very realistic looking flowers that most of your guest might not be able to differentiate whether they are real or not unless they touch them. The only thing that might give them away is the scent that is associated with real flowers. Try using a nice air freshener or maybe you can add some real flowers in with the artificial creation to give them some scent. This would make for a nice combination. You do not need to order a lot just maybe one or two flowers to put in with each artificial arrangement.

Artificial flowers will not fade or wilt after a few days or years for that matter and you can keep them for an indefinite period without having to use preservatives to maintain their original look. They do not cause any allergic reaction so you and your guests won’t have to worry about going through the service with red itchy noses or eyes.

Spring or Summer Flowers

Planning a spring or summer wedding? Read on to find out what’s hot and what’s not for bridal flowers in 2007.

The key to getting it right is to choose flowers that are in season. Deep red roses don’t really look the part on a hot summer’s day, whereas hydrangeas and sweet peas will suit a summery theme perfectly.

Spring flowers should encompass a feeling of gentle freshness along in soft colors with a pretty fragrance. Anemones, tulips, hyacinths and daffodils are perfect choices for spring bouquets. Tulips are reasonably priced and come in a whole range of shapes and colours. They give a contemporary feel to a wedding, although they can wilt quickly so beware of using them in a bouquet.

Soft yellows and lilacs look great together in a bouquet and can really capture the essence of spring. Spring is really in the air when primroses and violets are combined in floral arrangements. There are many pot-grown plants such as bellflowers, African violets and Cape Primroses that would also look great together along with flowering alpines such as mossy saxifrage. Primulas and violets in wicker cones can enliven any indoor or outdoor setting.

The Calla Lily is always a popular choice as it is delicate looking although sturdy in structure. Naturally, the calla lily lends itself to a range of floral decoration styles as the elegant shape of the curled spathe formed at the top of a long green stem produces a striking effect in bouquets and other arrangements. Many brides choose the Calla Lily as a central theme for their entire wedding.

All through spring, the flowering shrub world comes into its own, and this is clearly evident with the wonderful colors and flower types of camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias. These blooms make exquisite choices for brides whether you choose the palest shades and most delicate flowers to the big, blowsy rhododendrons heads in a myriad of lively tones.

Although many of these blooms look fragile they are actually long lasters and have a somewhat hardy nature. However, their shadings and subtle combinations of colors make them ideal as bouquet flowers when teamed with delicate satins or organzas.

Spring brides should also consider floral arrangements in their hair rather than a tiara. Small blooms can be attached to hair combs, slides or headbands and co-ordinated with button holes. Best to keep hairpieces small though as they can look at bit overpowering ~ not to mention expensive!

Summer flowers will have similar qualities to those from the spring although perhaps more fragrant and in deeper shades. Fine summer weather brings with it the possibility of a garden wedding. Open air settings require themes that will link the occasion to the place and time of year including the right flowers for the right time and location.

The summer brings an abundance of pretty flowers in subtle pinks, ivories, lilacs and white with intoxicating heady fragrances. Flowers at the wedding of a summer bride will probably be central to the entire wedding theme and everything else should fall into place around the floral choices.

Lavenders and lilacs clearly encompass everything a summer wedding should be and many summer brides choose bridesmaid dresses in these shades. To compliment the dress fabrics, go for lavenders and sweet peas to form the basis of the floral theme with other fragrant summer flowers making an appearance throughout. Blue, lilac and purple shades look fantastic on a bright and sunny day.

Fragrance is a very important factor to consider in a summer bouquet although stay clear of heady fragrances on reception tables where guests eat. Some blooms can have quite an overpowering scent that can be sickening during a meal.

The more highly perfumed flowers in summer bloom are stocks, sweet peas, jasmine, rosemary and peonies. Hydrangea and rose petals are also seasonal and would look great scattered on reception tables as well as thrown over the bride and groom!

Remember to order extra flowers to decorate the wedding cake with and you could also continue the floral theme with wedding favors.

Why not tie bunches of lavender with pink ribbons and a tag? These can then double as place settings and favors.

You could also present guests with a small corsage of flowers at their place setting and tie it to their napkins.

Some brides even hang them from the back of the chairs; perfect if you are having an outdoor wedding!

Whether you are marrying in the spring or the summer, never underestimate the importance of flowers on your wedding day.

If you are still unsure about what to go for, why not consult your local florist who would be happy to give you an idea of which blooms are best suited to you.
